Abstract

The article presents the results of the study of the psycho-emotional state, circumstances, and awareness of the choice of profession by students of higher medical education in the 1st year of study at the Odesa National Medical University. The relevance of the work is determined by the living conditions of the population of Ukraine, which affected the physical and mental health of people and the quality of life. The purpose of the study is to find out the psycho-emotional state of first-year students (year of entry: 2022) who made their professional choice in the conditions of socio-political changes and to analyze the influence of the latter on the choice of profession, its image, and the desire to continue studying. In order to achieve the goal, a survey of students of the "Medicine" specialty was conducted using the author's questionnaire and questionnaires PSS-10 (Cohen S. et al., 1983) and PHQ-4 (Kroenke K. et al., 2009). The author's questionnaire about the choice and image of the doctor's profession allowed to obtain information about the awareness of the choice of profession; changes in the perception of the image of the profession, in the desire to become a doctor, and in motivation; factors that prompted the choice of a medical specialty; satisfaction with the profession; difficulties faced by students during the first year of study. Results of the PSS-10 and PHQ-4 questionnaires revealed a predominance of medium stress levels and the presence of moderate and high levels of depression and anxiety. It was established that, despite negative changes in the psychoemotional state, students of higher medical education in the 1st year of study generally remain satisfied with the chosen specialty and the image of the profession. A high percentage of conscious choice of profession was noticed, and also that, despite various problems in education, the desire to become doctors has increased in the vast majority of respondents. The identification of a group of students who have lost motivation to study and are disappointed in their decision is a reason for higher education institution to intensify the work of psychological services and popularization activities on the topic of the doctor's image. It was concluded that the monitoring of the professional orientations of the students is important in the establishment of the pedagogical process in the institution of higher medical education.
